It appears to me that domestic American discussions are still very dominated by the discussions during the election campaign." That will take priority for now and I believe only then will the administration make a declaration on NATO and Europe." MAN STANDING NEAR DOOR (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER, FRANK-WALTER STEINMEIER, SAYING: "The Trans-Atlantic relationship is more than the relationship between two states or between the United States and Europe. Rather, it is the basis of the west and that's why we have every reason to express our appreciation of this trans-Atlantic relationship to the American side as often and as early as possible. We need to promote it so that the other side of the Atlantic cares for it as much as we do. Thank you." FDP LOGO ON WALL STEINMEIER WALKING OFF

- Story Text: The domestic and foreign policy of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration remains unclear after the inauguration speech, said German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday (January 23).
Speaking to reporters at an unrelated event, Steinmeier said "all those who were hoping that we might already hear something more concrete on domestic and foreign policy during the inauguration speech must today say that for the moment, we don't know yet."
A spokesman for Germany's foreign ministry said more than two weeks ago that German officials who held talks with members of the then U.S. president-elect's transition team had not been able to figure out what kind of foreign and security policy his administration wanted to pursue.
Steinmeier added that "the clashes on the streets and the demonstrations for and against the new administration indicate that a lot of work is still needed for this country to be united behind the president."
He underlined Germany's appreciation of the trans-Atlantic relationship, saying it was "more than the relationship between two states or between the United States and Europe."
"Rather, it is the basis of the west and that's why we have every reason to express our appreciation of this trans-Atlantic relationship to the American side as often and as early as possible."
Steinmeier said the relationship needed to be "promoted" so that "the other side of the Atlantic cares for it as much as we do." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
