- Story Text:Authorities in Mexico announced on Monday (January 23) that one of the top kingpins of the Sinaloa Cartel has been captured in a police operation in the country's north.
Juan Jose Esparragoza, or Jose "N", was arrested in the northern city of Culiacan on January 19, police said. According to officials, he is one of the Sinaloa Cartel's main leaders and was responsible for coordinating drugs operations.
"Jose N, 46 years old, originally from Culiacan, Sinaloa and likely responsible for establishing a drugs network and administering the financial resources of the criminal gang. He also invested in the purchase of furniture and property and in creating companies," said National Security Commissioner, Renato Sales.
Various guns, telecommunications equipment and drugs were allegedly seized during the arrest.
"During the capture one long and two short guns, telecommunications equipment and 199 packs of a substance known as cocaine were all secured," added Sales.
The announcement of Esparragoza's capture comes just days after Mexican kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was extradited to the United States to face trafficking charges from when he was the head of the Sinaloa Cartel. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
