- Story Text: Europe must stick together and cooperate with other parts of the world after the United States could "go down a path of isolationism," said Martin Schulz, candidate of Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) for chancellor.
Speaking one day after being announced as the SPD's contestant to conservative Angela Merkel in the September election, Schulz said "in a time when societies are drifting apart we are also seeing that states are drifting apart and that politics, at least announced during the election campaign, could lead to the United States of America going down a path of isolationism."
Schulz, former president of the European Parliament, also said that his party wanted to supply the next German chancellor "in whatever (political party) setup."
"Let me make very clear that we will introduce our programme and then our future coalition partners will have to respect the contents."
Earlier, Schulz was received with applause as he visited the SPD's parliamentary fraction in the Bundestag.
The nomination on Tuesday (Jan. 24) followed party leader Sigmar Gabriel's decision to stand aside for Schulz, a move that shows the SPD is serious about ending its role as a junior partner in Merkel's current right-left coalition after the Sept. 24 vote. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
