- Story Text: Opposition senators took aim at republican President Donald Trump Tuesday (January 24) as Independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont weighed in on Trump's accusations on voter fraud and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for action on exchange rates.
"First regarding Mr. Trump's delusional statement that three to five million people voted illegally in the last election, that is a total nonsensical statement," Sanders said. "He is sending a message to every Republican governor in this country to go forward with voter suppression," Sanders added.
Earlier the White House said Trump stands by his belief that millions of people voted illegally in the U.S. election, despite widespread evidence to the contrary.
State officials in charge of the Nov. 8 election have said they found no evidence of widespread voter fraud and there is no history of it in U.S. elections. Even House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, the most senior Republican in Congress, said he had seen no evidence to back up Trump's claims.
Senator Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the U.S. Senate, urged Trump on Tuesday to implement one of his campaign promises and declare China a currency manipulator.
"Mr. President: if you really want to put America first, label China a currency manipulator," Schumer told reporters.
Trump's Treasury secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin has told senators that he would work to combat currency manipulation but would not give a clear answer on whether he currently views China as manipulating its yuan, according to a Senate Finance Committee document seen by Reuters on Monday. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
