- Story Text: At this cafe in east Taiwan, chicken is on the menu and also part of the decor, with chirpy chicks running around the customers as they eat and drink.
The "K Show" cafe has been in business in Hualien since 2013, serving beverages and light, Western-style meals. But it wasn't until a year later when the chickens showed up.
"We didn't raise the chicks at the beginning, we got them later," says K Show owner Chiu Chih-Ying. "There were a couple of customers from Taipei who had a lunch at my restaurant before heading to Taitung to spend the night. They had picked up three chicks on a mountain path. They asked me to give shelter to the chicks for a night as they thought it was not very convenient for them to take the chicks to Taitung. They said they would come back to pick them up on the next day. But they didn't show up. So we have been raising chicks since then."
The first batch of chicks settled down on the patch of grass near the windows that was already part of the cafe interior.
When they grow too big and start straying off the grass and onto tables, Chiu exchanges them. The cafe usually has four chicks in residence.
Chiu says he trades his flock for newly-hatched chicks from a local chicken farm every three weeks.
With the Year of the Rooster, according to the Chinese Zodiac calendar, approaching, customers are especially happy to see the chicks running around as they provide a festive mood.
"Yes, as it's going to be the Year of Rooster, having chicks accompanying us (while have a meal here) gives us a feel of the (upcoming) Lunar New Year," said local resident and customer Wang Kai-li.
The Lunar New Year will be celebrated next Saturday (January 28), heralding the Year of the Rooster. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
