- Story Text:German comedy "Toni Erdmann" was named on Tuesday (January 24) as an Oscar nominee in the foreign language film category, and producer Jonas Dornbach is ecstatic.
"We are totally happy. It is of course an unbelievable recognition, for work that we put our heart and soul into for seven years," he said, speaking to Reuters from his office in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin.
"We had the champagne for quite a while in the fridge, and there were a few occasions where we didn't open it. But we were very happy to open it today and yes, die korke knallten," he said, turning to a phrase in his native German which means, "to let the champagne flow."
Dornbach said he was watching the nominations live on the Oscars website, when director and screenwriter Maren Ade texted him while on a train from Karlsruhe to the German capital.
"(S)he had a bad connection and no Internet, so she wrote, 'Are we nominated? Than I'm nominated?'" he said with a smile.
"Toni Erdmann" is the story of a prankster father who aims to reconnect with his tough, career-driven daughter by creating an outrageous alter ego. It has been considered a critical hit since debuting at the Cannes Film Festival last May. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
