- Story Text: Tens of thousands of people protested in London and other British cities on Monday (January 30) against President Donald Trump's ban on entry to the United States by refugees and people from seven predominantly Muslim countries.
Thousands of people, some holding placards reading "No to Racism, No to Trump", "Dump Trump" and "I stand with Muslims", joined a protest outside the Downing Street residence of Prime Minister Theresa May, who visited Trump in Washington on Friday.
Some chanted "Shame on May" for her offer to Trump of a state visit to Britain.
"There comes a moment when we have to ask our government where do you stand? That's why I'm here today. Not just because I believe what Trump is doing is appalling. Not just because I believe it's counter productive. Not just because I know that it will not achieve what he says he is trying to achieve. But because I want my government to stand up and say he is wrong," said Conservative Lawmaker, Baroness Sayeeda.
"I think almost everything about Donald Trump I profoundly disagree with. In this case it's the idea that this most respected of nations, the United States of America, that's epitomised by the fact it has got liberty as the welcome for everybody should suddenly turn right round 180 degrees and wash its hands of that most sacred principle. I don't want us to be patting him on the back for doing so," added actor, Tony Robinson.
Nearly a 1.5 million people have signed a petition calling for Trump's planned British visit - which will involve lavish displays of royal pageantry and a banquet hosted by Queen Elizabeth - to be cancelled. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
