- Story Text: German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Monday (January 30) paid their respects at the site of the Berlin Christmas market attack where a Ukrainian national was also among the victims.
Tunisian man Anis Amri, who had sworn his allegiance to IS in a video message, ploughed a truck through a festive Berlin market on December 19, killing 12 people.
Amri, 24-years-old, was shot dead in a town near Milan after he pulled a gun on police during a routine check.
In an earlier news conference Merkel emphasized Germany's continuing support and close ties to Ukraine, calling the latest surge in violence, 'worrying.'
Ukraine says more soldiers have been killed in the deadliest clashes in weeks, and calls for resolute action on Russia.
Poroshenko said five Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in fighting on Sunday (January 29) while Ukraine's military said on Monday the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed in an offensive by pro-Russian separatists over the past two days had risen to seven.
This is the deadliest outbreak of fighting in the east of the country since mid-December.
The clashes between Ukraine's military and the pro-Russian separatists coincide with U.S. President Donald Trump's call for better relations with Moscow that has alarmed Kiev while the conflict in its eastern region remains unresolved. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
