- Story Text: Elisabeth Moss' new TV show ''Shining Girls'' combines drama with sci-fi to tell the story of woman dealing with the repercussions of a traumatic assault.
''I would describe ''Shining Girls'' as a thrilling action drama that has a sci-fi element, that is very character driven,'' one of the series' directors and producer Michelle MacLaren told Reuters.
As well as directing some of the episodes, Moss stars in the new Apple TV+ show as Kirby Mazrachi, a newspaper archivist whose memory has been affected following a horrific attack a few years ago.
Apple's show notes explain that ''Mazrachi learns that a recent murder is linked to her assault,'' and so she ''teams with veteran reporter Dan Velazquez to understand her ever-changing present and confront her past.''
Brazilian actor Wagner Moura was pleased to be cast in the role of Velazquez: ''I'm very happy... as a Latino, to be playing a character that's not a stereotype of what Hollywood usually sees as the place that they they put Latinos like always the violent guy,'' he told Reuters. Saying that having played roles such as Pablo Escobar in hit Netflix show ''Narcos'' he's done his share of those roles.
''I think that we (Latinos) represent...a big part of what the U.S. is right now. So it's good to be playing...a journalist.''
Meanwhile English actor Jamie Bell is onboard as creepy Harper Curtis, who Bell says is a ''deranged sociopath ....a complex human being.''
Also explaining that the show, which demonstrates Mazrachi's struggles with reality as well as switching between the 1990s and 1960s, is not so much a ''who dunnit'' as a ''how dunnit''.
''It's definitely genre bending,'' explains MacLaren, whose previous credits include ''Breaking Bad'' and ''The X-Files''.
''I loved the time shifts....It's done mostly editorial, rather than CG (computer generated)...we wanted this to feel very grounded and real,'' she said.
''I hope ultimately that people realise that trauma can have lasting emotional effects and that our character (Kirby) - she's a survivor. She's not a victim.''
''We have the choice of how we process something. And I think ultimately, if people can be inspired and feel empowered by our character, that would be amazing.''
''Shining Girls'' is on Apple TV+ from April 29.
