- Story Text: Residents in one large compound in Shanghai remained under a strict lockdown on Thursday (June 2) despite being told that two 'abnormal' test results amongst them this week were false positives and not positive cases of the virus, and Shanghai officially ending its citywide lockdown on June 1.
Earlier this week, images from the same compound in downtown Jing'an district went viral on Chinese social media after around 40-50 residents staged an impromptu protest on Monday (May 30) after hearing of the impending lockdown.
In front of a heavy police presence angry residents demanded more information from officials and the removal of yellow barriers which they felt were a huge fire risk, a fact highlighted by a large fire which took place in a neighbouring compound on the same day. The group of residents went on to remove the yellow barriers themselves and they have not since been replaced.
One local resident, who declined to be identified, told Reuters on Thursday he felt “frustratedâ€.
“It’s this idea that there is nothing in policy, there's nothing there to say that we have to be locked in… people have done nothing wrong. We've taken the test anytime that they have said, get a test and they’ve been forcing us to have tests in the middle of the night. It makes you feel like a criminal,†he said.
