- Story Text: A bank manager based in India's northern Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir federal territory was shot dead by alleged militants on Thursday (May 02), the latest in a spate of targeted killings of Hindus and Muslims.
The victim, identified as Vijay Kumar from northwestern Rajasthan state was killed while he was at work in the bank when a suspected militant entered the bank premises and opened fire at him, killing him on the spot, said media reports.
Angered by the frequent killings, protests erupted in Srinagar and Jammu cities, where demonstrators including, teachers carrying posters, banners, and placards came out on the streets condemning the killings and demanding a safe environment for the minorities living in the region.
"No one is safe and that is why they (Hindus) should be transferred from there (Kashmir) and shifted to their home districts. We should be asked to serve from there (our home districts) as we have come here to work. We have a pen (as our weapon) and we cannot fight people with guns," said a protesting teacher, Ramesh Chand.
More than 100 Hindu families have fled Kashmir as panic has spread after the killings. A schoolteacher and a television artist were also shot dead in less than a week.
India and its arch-rival Pakistan both claim Jammu and Kashmir - which New Delhi reorganised into two federally administered territories in 2019 - in full but each only controls one part of the Himalayan region.
Some 250,000 Kashmiri Pandits left the Kashmir valley because of a sharp rise in the killings of Hindus and attacks on their homes at the start of a rebellion by Muslim militants in 1989.
Last month, a Kashmiri Pandit working for the local government was shot dead inside his office, leading to protests by other employees from the minority community who demanded re-location to safer areas outside the Kashmir valley. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
