- Story Text: With a sharp drop in coronavirus cases and an end of a two-month hard lockdown, residents in Shanghai were out dining and enjoying picnics on Friday (June 3), to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.
Many residents were also seen shopping at Xintiandi, the city's popular shopping street, and said they were 'happy' to be able to celebrate the festival after missing out on several other holidays earlier.
Most restaurants are now allowed to serve groups of customers dining at open areas, while some stores have re-opened their shopfronts for takeaways.
After being mostly cooped up at home for two months, 33-year-old resident Gu Zheyin came out with her mother for lunch at their favourite place at downtown Shanghai.
“I am so happy. We like this place in Xintiandi (shopping street) and we come every month. We have been under lockdown and haven’t been here for two months. This is my first day, excited, I am very excited,†Gu told Reuters.
China's biggest city and business hub lifted lockdowns for most of its 25 million residents on Wednesday (June 1).
Shanghai reported eight new symptomatic cases for Thursday (June 2), compared with five a day earlier, local government data showed. Asymptomatic cases in the city were unchanged at eight versus a day earlier.
