- Story Text:Dozens of Canadians gathered for a series of events in Toronto's Old Town neighborhood to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee on Thursday (June 02), as she becomes the first British Monarch to celebrate 70 years of service.
Organized by the Town of York Historical Society and Toronto's First Post Office, the free event included an official proclamation by the Town of York Historical Society's Town Crier and a tour of St. Lawrence Hall with historian Bruce Bell who shared tales of the neighborhood's history, and Toronto's royal connections.
Queen Elizabeth, 96, the longest-reigning monarch in British history and the third-longest reigning monarch ever of a sovereign state, enjoys widespread popularity according to surveys, with many of her subjects, particularly the elderly, holding her in deep affection.
Elizabeth became the queen of the United Kingdom and more than a dozen other realms, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand on the death of her father, King George VI, on Feb. 6, 1952, while she was in Kenya on an international tour.
Thursday marks not only the start of the Jubilee but also the 69th anniversary of the coronation of Elizabeth.
