- Story Text: Guests with MBEs were among some of those invited to attend the Platinum Jubilee thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday (June 3).
The Queen announced yesterday that she would not be attending after feeling “some discomfort†during Thursday’s Trooping of the Colour and Balcony fly past.
Liz Parkes, MBE who works for the Environment Agency said and other guests were "slightly disappointed".
"This won’t be a decision that Her Majesty has taken lightly so it’s really important that she can enjoy this in comfort and we know that she will be with us in spirit," she said.
Prince Andrew missed the service after testing positive for COVID, but Meghan and Harry have walked the steps of St Paul’s, the first time the public will see them as part of the Jubilee celebrations.
Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Subramaniam Balachandran was awarded an MBE for his services to providing appropriate PPE to health workers during the pandemic.
"This a once in a lifetime opportunity, not only for me and also everyone who is part of this occasion and this once in a lifetime opportunity, I believe it is going to be in the history, I don’t think that any other monarch (is going to be on the throne) for more than 70 years, so it is going to be in the history,†he told Reuters.
Bridget Stratford MBE and Nisha Webster had travelled from Newcastle to attend the service.
They work for NEST (North East Solidarity and Training) supporting refugees and asylum seekers. They’ve recently been working to support Ukrainian refugees who have arrived to the UK.
"It’s a real honour to do what we do,†said Nisha Webster, “it's just amazing that we're able to be here today and represent NEST.â€
The St Paul’s Cathedral website said the service would include bible readings, anthems, prayers and congregational hymns, expressing thankfulness for The Queen’s reign, faith and service, desire to foster unity and peace amongst all peoples, and commitment to care for God’s creation.
The Service will include a new Anthem by Judith Weir, Master of The Queen’s Music, that sets to music words from the third Chapter of the Book of Proverbs.
