- Story Text: Large crowds lined the streets of Edinburgh as Queen Elizabeth's coffin began its long journey from St Giles’ Cathedral in the Scottish capital to London on Tuesday (September 13).
It had lain in state for 24 hours and the Scottish government said more than 26,000 members of the public filed past it.
The hearse, with a skylight on the brightly illuminated casket compartment, transported the coffin from the cathedral to Edinburgh airport before its journey to RAF Northolt in west London.
In London, the coffin was driven to Buckingham Palace past thousands of spectators, some of whom watched in silence while others applauded or cheered.
The late Queen’s coffin will be taken to Westminster Hall on Wednesday (September 14) and will lie in state prior to Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday (September 19).
