- Story Text: The Detroit Auto Show, the largest such event in North America, highlighted automakers' increasing shift to electric vehicles and billions of dollars in new investments in battery plants.
U.S. President Joe Biden announced the approval of the first $900 million in U.S. funding to build EV charging stations in 35 states as part of a $1 trillion infrastructure law approved last November.
The goal is to create a nationwide charging network.
Still, some auto experts and everyday Americans are skeptical of the president's goal.
“Can you imagine trying to put all of the infrastructure together, in a country that’s so big," said Marco Gollarza, automobile enthusiast and host of "All About Cars" on YouTube. "Not that we can’t do it, but it’s going to be a challenge.â€
“He (Biden) won’t be alive and I won’t be alive, because that’s when it becomes a reality," said Detroit native Adolph Mongo. "It’s going to be a while. Listen, everybody should have a dream and he got a dream. That’s his dream right now.â€
In August 2021, Biden set a goal that EVs or plug-in hybrid vehicles represent 50% of all U.S. new vehicle sales by 2030.
