- Story Text:Locals from Aberdeenshire lined the streets of the village of Ballater to see the funeral cortege of Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday (September 11) as it started its journey to Edinburgh.
Emotion was high and many, like Elizabeth Alexander, 69, dried tears from their eyes as they watched the procession pass.
“I’m happy I was here to say our goodbyesâ€, Alexander, who was born on Queen Elizabeth’s coronation day in 1953, told Reuters.
Ballater resident Pauline Lawson, 62, described the late Queen as “everything you’d want from a monarch." She said it had been a very sad week for people in the village located only a few miles away from Balmoral Castle.
Henry Irvine-Fortescue, 64, a deputy of the Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire, who represents the monarch at official occasions, said that, although locals shared the sorrow of the Royal Family, there was also “a sense of celebration in the Queen’s lifeâ€.
Former soldier Robin Phillips, 56, said he had sworn an oath of allegiance to Elizabeth 40 years ago and it had been a pleasure to serve under her.
“She was our boss, and we hold a lot of pride in thatâ€, Phillips said.
Elizabeth died on Thursday (September 8) aged 96.
The cortege will travel to Edinburgh, from where her coffin will be flown to London to lie in state before her funeral, which will take place on Sept. 19.
