- Story Text: Detroit's automakers say they are ready to go all-electric, but at the Motor City's auto show this week they are adding a caveat - just not quite yet.
Automakers showed off a number of new electric vehicles (EVs) at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Wednesday, September 14. Chevrolet took the wraps off two new electric models, the 2024 Chevy Blazer SUV and the 2024 Chevy Equinox compact SUV. On the other side of the show floor, Dodge had its Daytona SRT concept, billed as the 'first electric muscle car' on display.
Still, despite the prominent showings of EVs, the venue is still predominantly filled with combustion engines.
“Let’s look at the evolution of the automobile and the I-C-E when it first came out, you know, where it was and where it is now," said Vince Carioti, Director of E-mobility for Germany-based auto parts manufacturer Phoenix Contact. "There’s development time it takes. We’re such a society that’s instant, you know, go through the drive-thru and get everything instantly. I think it’s just going to take some time to get there.â€
U.S. President Joe Biden visited the show on Wednesday, along with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, ahead of the show's public opening on Friday. The backdrop of gleaming cars was an ideal backdrop to promote the U.S. administration's efforts to accelerate the production of electric cars.
