- Story Text: A district court in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state held a plea by five Hindu women for access to the mosque with an aim to worship the Hindu idol images on the mosque's exterior wall, as maintainable on Monday (September 12).
The plea was filed last month and the petitioners moved the court to restrict the mosque authorities from getting rid of the images.
"We are very happy. The strategies that lie ahead will be planned by our lawyers," said one of the plaintiffs, Laxmi Devi.
The defendant's lawyer, Mohammed Sameem said the mosque is willing to move the High Court.
The next hearing on the case is scheduled on September 22.
In May this year, the Gyanvapi Mosque underwent a videographic survey.
The religious debate over the Gyanvapi Mosque dates back to 1991. Hindu devotees moved the court claiming that the mosque stood on what was earlier the grounds for a Hindu temple of the deity Swayambhu Lord Vishweshwar. According to the plaintiffs, the temple was demolished by the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb in 1669.
The rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has emboldened hardline religious groups in recent years to take up causes that they say to defend the Hindu faith, although his party has denied any rise in communal tensions during Modi's reign. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
