- Story Text:Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Wednesday (September 14) that he is signing a disaster proclamation to secure resources for the asylum-seekers bused to Illinois from Texas.
“I'm signing this proclamation today to ensure that these men, women, and children get the services they need - shelter, food, medicine,†he said.
The governor also announced he is temporarily deploying 75 members of the National Guard to assist in these efforts.
“These are logistics professionals who will help local governments receive and transport new arrivals, stand up additional housing as needed and support local government and nonprofits on the ground,†he said.
Pritzker criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott for failing to communicate with Illinois officials and questioned why he’s only sending migrants to “blue†[Democratic] cities and states.
Also speaking at Wednesday’s press conference, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the situation a “manufactured crisis by ambush†and asked for “federal support, resources, communication, and collaboration.â€
Approximately 500 migrants have arrived in Chicago since August 31st, according to the Mayor, who said she expects this number to grow.
Abbott also has sent thousands of migrants to Washington, D.C., and New York City in an effort to push responsibility for border crossers to Democrats, including U.S. President Joe Biden.
