- Story Text: Victoria Escandon, the grandmother of Carlos Alcaraz, was still shaking on Monday (September 12) when she recalled the moment her grandson won the U.S. Open and became world number one.
“I feel happy, happy and complete, excited. I don’t have words to describe how I feel. It is huge,†she said.
Victoria was visiting Alcaraz’s mother for a few days at the family flat in El Palmar, a town of roughly 24,000 people in the Municipality of Murcia in southeast Spain, when her grandson defeated Norway's Casper Ruud in the U.S. Open final.
The electrifying Alcaraz, who thrilled fans over the two-week tournament in New York with his explosive speed, booming forehand and acrobatic shotmaking battled from two set points in the final game of the third set all the way to the victory.
“I was very excited and nervous during the match because I don’t feel well when I see him suffering to claim the match. I suffer but then the reward comes, a big reward,†Victoria told Reuters adding that she can’t wait to give him a hug.
Alcaraz is expected to land in Valencia on Tuesday (September 13) for the Davis Cup.
At just 19, the wonder kid is already seen as the new king of tennis by Spanish media.
“The New King†read sports newspaper AS, “Carlos I†read local newspaper La Verdad.
After conquering his first Grand Slam Alcaraz is the youngest world number one since the ATP rankings began in 1973, breaking the mark set by Lleyton Hewitt, who was 20 when he became number one in 2001.
