- Story Text:Residents of a flood-hit town in central Italy were in shock on Friday (September 16) as they tried to clear away debris from destroyed streets, shops and homes after flash floods that killed at least nine in Italy’s central Marche region.
Eighty-year-old pensioner Gianfranco Tuferri was clearing away floodwater with a broom from his ground-floor apartment in Cantiano, which he said was filled with half a metre of water.
“You can only imagine what it looked like.
Thunder and lightening that is indescribable. I am 80-years-old and I have never seen anything like this,†he said.
Luciana Agostinelli’s fruit shop was submerged with water with crates and fruit scattered all over.
"Very scary, very scary….we didn’t sleep last night,†she said.
Others were luckier.
Giancarlo Sborzachi’s home wasn’t affected, but his parked car was slung across the square during the extreme weather.
"It was scary. There is nothing we can do,†he said.
