- Story Text:Deadly torrential overnight rains and floods in the central Italian region of Marche swept through several towns leaving a trail of trapped and damaged cars, shops, and roads as residents came together to clear away the never-ending debris on Friday (September 16).
In Cantiano, a village close to the neighbouring Umbria region, residents and bulldozers were clearing mud from the streets, while destroyed cars were being towed away. Residents were hard at work removing ruined household and shop items and stacking them in piles outside, covered in mud.
Nine people were killed by the floods, authorities said, as rescuers continued to search for four still missing.
Around 400 millimetres (15.75 inches) of rain fell within two to three hours, the civil protection agency said, a third of the amount usually received in a year.
