China's ruling Communist Party meets on October 16 for the biggest reshuffle of its economic leadership in a decade, with Li Keqiang expected to step down in March 2023 after two terms as premier, a position tasked with managing the world's number two economy.
It is expected the party conclave will offer clues on who is in line for top posts and identify who succeeds Li, 67, who is widely perceived to have seen his role diminished under President Xi Jinping but has nonetheless been a source of comfort to investors who view him as a moderate voice.
Retirement age for top leaders is conventionally 68 or two five-year terms. Xi is expected to maintain these norms for leaders other than himself.
Li has a doctorate in economics from the elite Peking University and speaks fluent English.
