Untimely rains across several Indian states have waterlogged residential localities and many rivers are in spate, causing them to flood adjacent areas.
Locals in northeastern Dibrugarh joined hands to build embankments along the bank of the Brahmaputra River which is threatening to engulf parts of the district.
“Within the past 20-25 days, stretches of land summing up to approximately 20-30 meters have been engulfed by the Brahmaputra River,†said a local, Niranjan Mech.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority said the incessant rains submerged 46 villages in Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, and Lakhimpur districts.
Meanwhile, incessant rains in southern Hubli city flooded the basements of buildings.
The rainy season usually draws to a close in northwest India from mid-September, and it should be ending across the country by mid-October.
Some environmentalists suspect climate change is behind the unusually wet weather. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
