- Story Text: Fifty-two-year-old Libyan Ali Ruqeibi launched an initiative which aims at cleaning the waste and garbage that are widespread on the beaches of Libya, hoping to put an end to the pollution.
For thirteen years, Ruqebi has been holding these beach clean ups which he's dubbed 'The Sea and the Sun Campaign' at the end of every summer.
"Despite the garbage being almost everywhere at the beach, we are trying to reinforce the culture of preserving the environment and putting an end to pollution," Ruqeibi said.
The campaign has gained a huge following over the years, as many people come to Khoms from across the country to do their part.
People, including children, head out to the beaches, carrying plastic bags and filling them with garbage.
"We came here to clean and help with all our hands and effort to keep our beaches clean, starting from Khoms. We will clean our beaches from the east to the west in order to keep all the shores of Libya clean and everyone can their time there. I hope that everyone who visits the beach cleans up after them, said Suheir Iqteiri, a resident from Tripoli
