Forensics exhumated bodies on Tuesday (October 11) from what Ukrainian officials say is a mass grave in the recently liberated eastern town of Lyman.
Fifty five bodies of civilians and servicemen were found, according to Pavlo Kyrylenko, Donetsk Region governor.
He also stated that Ukraine’s officials do not exclude torture as the cause of death of some of the buried people.
“We would be able to say for sure only after the court medical expertise is over - whether a person died because of torture by the occupants,†said Kyrylenko.
Ukrainian authorities have regularly accused Russian troops of committing atrocities in occupied territories, a charge Moscow denies.
Last month the bodies of 436 people were exhumed from a burial site in the northeastern town of Izium after it was liberated. Most appeared to have died violent deaths, local officials said.
