- Story Text: This edit contains stock footage of Japanese yen banknotes, as the yen hits its lowest value against the U.S. dollar in 24 years on Wednesday (October 12).
The U.S. currency rose to 146.35 yen, a level not seen since August 1998 during the Asian financial crisis, moving above levels that triggered intervention by Japanese authorities last month to stem excessive yen weakening.
Japanese authorities staged their first yen-buying intervention since 1998 on Sept. 22, when the yen weakened to 145.90 per U.S. dollar.
Officials have reiterated they remain ready to take appropriate steps to counter excessive currency moves, though whether they wish to defend particular levels is less clear.
