- Title: Putin says Russia can supply EU via Nord Stream 2
- Date: 12th October 2022
- Summary: MOSCOW, RUSSIA (OCTOBER 12, 2022) (RUSSIAN POOL) (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "I have repeatedly said that Nord Streams has no political background, it is a purely commercial project, involving Russian and European companies on an equal footing, so its fate should be decided jointly by Russia and our partners in the European Union. I should say that repairing the undermined gas pipelines running under the Baltic Sea is, of course, possible, but it will only make sense in case of their economically sound operation, and of course, in case of ensuring the safety of the route." AUDIENCE (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "If we and the Europeans commonly decide to supply gas through the surviving line of Nord Stream 2 - and one branch appears to have survived, although we unfortunately are not allowed to inspect it, the pressure is maintained there, although it may be damaged. We do not know it, because we have not been allowed to the investigation. But the pressure remains so it should be in working condition. Its capacity is 27.5 CBM per year, about 8 percent of all gas imports in Europe. Russia is ready to start these supplies, the ball is in the EU's court, so to say. If they want to, just let them open the tap and that's it. We are not restricting anyone in anything, including our readiness to supply additional volumes in the autumn-winter period." (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING (STARTS OVER WIDE SHOT OF PUTIN SPEAKING): "According to the estimates by the experts, this year alone the spot gas pricing mechanism will result in a loss of over EUR 300 billion to Europe." AUDIENCE (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "What comes to the European market is sold at three times the price and it is driving inflation up the chain. It has already reached ten percent in the Eurozone. It is the ordinary Europeans who are suffering. In a year their electricity and gas bills have more than tripled. People, just like in the Middle Age, started stocking up on firewood for the winter. What is has to do with Russia? They are trying to put the blame on someone else for their own mistakes." - Story Text: President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday (October 12) that gas could still be supplied by one remaining intact part of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline but the ball was now in the European Union's court on whether or not it wanted gas supplied via it.
Putin also said that one line of Nord Stream 2 pipeline is likely to remain functional as it maintains pressure. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
