- Story Text:In a crime that has shocked the country, two women were killed in India's southern Pathanamthitta district in a "human sacrifice" ritual, police said on Wednesday (October 12).
The women, aged 52 and 49 were identified as two lottery sellers, who were cheated by the main conspirator Shafi on the pretext of providing financial help. The two were taken to the house of a couple, a 68-year-old man and his 59-year-old wife in the Aranmula area of the district who along with him killed them months apart.
Shafi had made a fake Facebook profile using the name of a woman and managed to convince the couple to offer them as human sacrifices in order to improve their financial condition.
Police said the victims' bodies were cut into pieces and buried in the backyard of the house where the crime was committed.
"We have arrested all three accused. We have remanded them to judicial custody and further investigation is on," Kochi Police Commissioner, C.H. Nagaraju said.
The body parts were exhumed and will be sent for DNA testing.
Human sacrifice is mainly an act of killing a human and offering it to a deity as a part of a ritual. It has been practised in many cultures throughout history. Victims are killed to please or appease Gods or spirits.
False notions and fallacy guide the lives of illiterate people, mostly in India's rural areas, where superstitious people perform human sacrifice because of their religious beliefs. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
