- Story Text:Emergency workers rescued victims in northern India on Wednesday (October 12) as deadly flooding hit the region, killing at least 18 people.
Heavy rain during the extended monsoon season caused rivers to overflow and engulfed local villages.
Eighteen people were killed in various accidents attributed to the rain in Uttar Pradesh, including drownings and electrocutions, authorities said on Monday (October 10).
Boats and rafts were deployed to carry out the rescue operations in the northern Shravasti and Sitapur districts.
Approximately 114 villages in Shravasti were affected by the rain-triggered floods, out of which at least 48 were marooned, affecting a total of 1,00,000 locals, said Neha Prakash, the District Magistrate.
The rainy season usually ends in northwest India in mid-September, and it usually clears by mid-October.
Heavy rainfall has damaged key summer-sown crops such as rice, soybean, cotton, pulses and vegetables just before harvesting, which could stoke food inflation in Asia's third biggest economy, farmers, traders and industry officials said.
Higher food prices could prompt New Delhi to slap additional restrictions on exports of food commodities such as rice, wheat, and sugar, and potentially force the Reserve Bank of India to raise interest rates again.
