- Story Text: Australian soccer player Josh Cavallo urged sporting leaders on Wednesday (October 12) to consider LGBTQ rights and safety when choosing host countries for World Cups and other competitions.
The Adelaide United defender, who made headlines around the world after coming out as openly gay in October last year, implored figures in the sport to "do better" during his speech at the Attitude Awards in London.
Cavallo also had a message for Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal, ahead of the FIFA World Cup in November.
“I vow to stand up for the LGBTQ athletes and the fans at the World Cup in Qatar, who can’t live openly, authentically. Qatar, FIFA, the world is watching. Do you see us?", he said, receiving cheers from the audience.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) at the World Cup has previously said that Qatar is a "conservative country" but was "committed to delivering an inclusive FIFA World Cup experience that is welcoming, safe and accessible to all".
During his acceptance speech for Attitude's Man of the Year award, the 22-year-old went on to speak about the work that still needs to be done to achieve equality.
"For many, standing up and living honestly puts them in harms way. It's dangerous, even deadly. We're far from true equality when 69 countries still criminalise LGBTQ people and brushes these issues off, not realising their son, daughter, or team-mate might be LGBTQ," Cavallo said.
