- Story Text:The Syrian directorate of antiquities announced on Wednesday (October 12) the discovery of a rare mosaic panel that experts say dates back to the Roman era.
Found situated between two houses in a street in Syria's al-Rastan district, the panel is believed to have originally been the flooring of a hall.
According to experts, the 20 by 6 meter artifact depicts two main scenes from the Amazon war, which is mentioned in Iliad (by Homer), and a picture of Poseidon.
"(Visuals of) the panel were published on social media (during the war). There were groups that entered the area and reached the panel, as you can see the tunnels still exist. These tunnels were here when we arrived at the site, head of the excavation mission, Humam Saad said.
Experts expect to find more artifacts in the area, with the panel likely continuing underneath neighboring houses.
Syria’s 11-year war hit the historical artifacts based there very hard, with hardline groups destroying artefacts and others looted by smugglers.
