- Title: Highlights of main world events for September 2022
- Date: 25th November 2022
- Summary: In the biggest escalation of the Ukraine war since Moscow's Feb. 24 invasion, Putin explicitly raised the spectre of a nuclear conflict, approved a plan to annex a chunk of Ukraine the size of Hungary, and called up 300,000 reservists. The announcement of “partial mobilisation†triggered protests and waves of people fleeing over the border into neighbouring countries to avoid being called up. Putin also warned the West he was not bluffing when he said he'd be ready to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia. MOSCOW, RUSSIA (RELEASED SEPTEMBER, 21 2022) (RUSSIAN POOL) (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "I think it is necessary to support the proposal of the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff to conduct a partial (military) mobilisation in Russia. I repeat: we are only talking about a partial mobilisation. Only people currently in the military reserve will be drafted - prioritising those who have served in the armed forces, and have a particular military specialisation and the corresponding experience. Before being sent to serve, those drafted will have mandatory additional training, relying on experience gained during the special military operation. The decree on partial mobilisation has been signed." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "I want to remind those who allow themselves such statements about Russia that our country also has a variety of weapons of destruction, and in some areas even more modern than those in NATO countries. And if the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will without question use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. This is not a bluff."
