Russian missiles crashed into residential buildings in the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia on Monday (December 5), destroying several houses and killing at least two people, a senior Ukrainian official said.
Reuters video showed two bodies covered with blankets lying next to a damaged car in the village of Novosofiivka, some 25 km to the east from the city of Zaporizhzhia. Damaged houses and massive crater were seen, with police and paramedics operating at site.
Olga Troshyna, a 62-year-old village resident, told Reuters a couple of her neighbours were killed while they were seeing off their son and daughter-in-law.
A new barrage had been anticipated for days and came on a day when emergency blackouts were due to end, with previous damage repaired. The strikes plunged parts of Ukraine back into freezing darkness with temperatures nationwide now firmly below zero. However, Kyiv said its air defences limited the damage.
