Supporters of ousted Peruvian President, Pedro Castillo, clashed with the riot police on Wednesday (December 7) in front of the police station where the now ex-leader is reported to be after the vote to remove him.
Castillo was reportedly detained in a police station in Lima on rebellion charges, the general attorney informed in a statement. The move came after the earlier Congress’ impeachment trial, hours after he plunged the country into a constitutional crisis by attempting to dissolve the legislature by decree.
Tensions mounted when the riot police stepped in with firecrackers to clear a protest against the President’s removal.
Ignoring Castillo's attempt to shut down Congress, lawmakers moved ahead with the previously planned impeachment trial, with 101 votes in favor of removing him, six against, and 10 abstentions.
