- Story Text:The usually calm capital of Brazil readies for leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's inauguration on Saturday (December 31). Da Silva is set to take office on Sunday (January 1).
Reuters cameras captured people arriving at the Mane Garrincha stadium for a camp to attend the inauguration ceremony. A gigantic flag of Brazil was also displayed and waved by supporters of the president-elect.
Lula will take the oath of office for a third, non-consecutive term at a ceremony in Congress.
Thigh security is being prepared for the event after fears of some of Lula's rival Bolsonaro's supporters who have refused to accept the president-elect's victory, believing his baseless claims that the October election was stolen.
This has contributed to a tense atmosphere in the capital Brasilia, with riots and a foiled bomb plot last week.
The man who confessed to making the bomb told police that Bolsonaro's call to arms inspired him to build an arsenal of guns and explosives.
At Brasilia, security officers were seen inspecting vehicles with sniffer dogs at the parking lot of Brazil's National Congress ahead of the event.
For his part, outgoing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro landed in Florida on Friday (December 30), after delivering a teary message to his supporters less than two days before the inauguration.
Bolsonaro's exit from Brazil came after he repeatedly said he would not hand over the presidential sash to Lula at Sunday's inauguration, breaking with Brazil's democratic tradition.
It is unknown if Bolsonaro will attend the ceremony.
