- Story Text: Brazil's Santos paid tribute to Brazilian soccer star Pele with a drone show and fireworks on New Year's Eve (December 31).
In the municipality of Santos, the streets filled with people eager to celebrate the memory of football idol Pele, who died on Thursday (December 29).
The drones formed figures depicting Pele and his famous playing style, while screens played images of the late soccer legend.
Pele, whose given name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, joined Santos in 1956 and turned the small coastal club into one of the most famous names in football.
The idol died on Thursday (December 29) at 3:27 p.m. local time (18:27 GMT) due to multiple organ failures resulting from the progression of colon cancer, according to Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital. He was 82.
Brazil declared three days of mourning to lament his passing, with global leaders, fans, and friends paying their respects to the sports icon.
Pele scored a world record of 1,281 goals and is the only player ever to win the World Cup three times.
