- Story Text: Fans of late Brazilian soccer star Pele showed their grief for his death on Sunday (January 1) ahead of the coffin with the legend’s body will set off to his hometown club Santos for a wake on Monday (January 2).
Fans hung pictures of Pele and banners with messages of grief outside Sao Paulo's Israeli Albert Einstein Hospital, where the soccer star died, as a tribute to the only man to win the World Cup three times as a player.
A fan, Ronaldo Pereyra da Silva, said Pele was a life model to him as he learned from Pele to be more polite.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento - Pele's given name - died on Thursday (December 29) at the age of 82 "due to multiple organ failures resulting from the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous medical condition," the hospital said in a statement.
Pele's coffin will set off to the coastal city of Santos, his hometown club, after President-elect’s, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, inauguration on Sunday.
A wake will take place on Monday (January 2) in the centre of the pitch at the stadium of Santos.
