Former Pope Benedict, the first pontiff in 600 years to resign and a standard bearer for conservatives who yearned for a more traditional Church, died on Saturday (December 31), ending an extraordinary period in which two men wearing white lived in the Vatican.
Benedict, 95, died in a former monastery where he had lived since his shock resignation in 2013.
Both Catholics and non-Catholics paid tribute to the Benedict's theological legacy in the church, but others recalled his controversial positions on social issues including gay marriage and abortion as well as the child abuse scandals in the church under his papacy.
Leaders were swift in sending their condolences for Benedict, who was the first German pope in 1,000 years.
The Vatican announced a funeral on January 5 in Saint Peter's Square.
