- Story Text: German unemployment fell in December, Labour Office figures showed on Tuesday (January 3), with the labour market overall being only moderately affected by the war in Ukraine last year.
The Federal Labour Office said the number of people out of work decreased by 13,000 in seasonally adjusted terms to 2.52 million.
Analysts polled by Reuters had expected that figure to rise by 15,000.
The seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained stable at 5.5%.
The trade, traffic and hospitality industry sectors amounted to an increase of 180,000 jobs, according to the figures.
“When we look back at the past year with all its challenges and the impact of the war against Ukraine and price increases, I would say that left its marks on the labour market. But in view of the extent of the burdens which a lot of people feel in Germany, however, the impact on the labour market has been moderate," said Labour Office head Andrea Nahles.
