- Story Text: Pele’s funeral procession arrived at the late soccer star’s mother’s house on Tuesday (January 3), as part of a final send-off for the late Brazilian soccer great.
Pele’s casket travelled on top of a white firefighters truck and was covered with a Brazil flag. Several police officers on motorbikes were seen escorting the procession.
Pele’s mother Celeste Arantes turned 100 late last year. The soccer star is also survived by seven children and a number of grandchildren.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento - Pele's given name - was born in 1940 in the small country town of Tres Coracoes but moved to Santos in 1956 and lived there for most of his life.
Pele, a prolific goalscorer who won the World Cup an unprecedented three times as a player in 1958, 1962, and 1970, died aged 82 after a long battle with cancer.
