- Story Text: Latin church, St Francis Assissi Cathedral, in India's southern Kochi city held a mass followed by a candlelight procession to pay tribute to Pope Benedict XVI upon his death, on Monday (January 02).
Benedict died on Saturday at the age of 95 in the secluded Vatican monastery where he had lived since his shock resignation in 2013.
The archbishop, Dr Joseph Kalathiparambil presided over the mass where he performed rituals in front of the Pope's photograph where a candle burnt amid flowers that were offered to him.
"He (Pope Benedict XVI) had a keen sense of history and modesty. He was the Pope during a period of many problems and crises for the Church," said Kalathiparambil as he addressed devotees.
Priests and nuns of the church paid their homage to the Pope as they held candles and took part in a procession.
The mortal remains of Pope Benedict will lie in state until Wednesday (January 04). His funeral will be held on Thursday in St Peter's Square and be presided over by Pope Francis. The Vatican has said it will be a simple, solemn, and sober ceremony in keeping with his wishes.
During his eight-year papacy, Benedict, a methodical, shy, and very private German, had a hard time filling the shoes of the charismatic John Paul, inviting constant comparison in the media and among the faithful of the 1.3-billion-member Church. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
