Fans of the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals were praying for a quick recovery for Bills player Damar Hamlin after he was given CPR and taken from the field in an ambulance during Monday's (January 2) NFL game against Cincinnati.
"Life's more important than a game and people are more important than a game, said Bills fan Ian Kyle. “His mom is here and Buffalo's praying for him and whatever you believe in, good vibes and positive energy towards them and hopefully he's OK."
Hamlin experienced a cardiac arrest and was hospitalized in critical condition as of early Tuesday morning after collapsing
The Bills released a statement early Tuesday morning that read, Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition."
The 24-year-old briefly got to his feet after making what appeared to be a routine a tackle on the Bengals' Tee Higgins with 5:58 minutes remaining in the first quarter but then fell on his back.
"They need to care more about the players' safety,†said Bills fan Sean Luttrell, who lives in Dayton, Ohio.
The game in Cincinnati was halted as medical staff quickly attended to him while players from both teams took a knee. The NFL later announced the game had been postponed.
As Hamlin was taken to the hospital at 9:25 p.m. local time, players from both teams went to their locker rooms, some with tears in their eyes.
A McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania native who played college football at the University of Pittsburgh, Hamlin was taken by the Bills in the sixth round, 212th overall, of the 2021 NFL Draft.
