- Story Text: Sunbathers hit the beaches of Malaga in southern Spain on Wednesday (January 4) as an unseasonably warm winter brought temperatures as high as 20 C (68 F).
After registering the highest average temperature since at least 1916 last year amid consecutive heatwaves, Spain started 2023 with very warm weather, according to Spain's national weather agency AEMET data.
Locals and tourists swam and sunbathed at Malaga's Malagueta beach, enjoying the Mediterranean Sea. A Dutch tourist said he was escaping the rain in his country and was looking to start the year with warm weather.
"It is nice weather. In Holland, it's raining at this moment, so that’s why we came,†Marcel Heuvelmans, 58, said.
Temperatures broke some local records for the month of January on Jan. 1, with the mercury hitting 25.1 C (77.18 F) at the Bilbao airport in the Basque Country, a temperature that would be normal for that area in northern Spain in the summer.
Last year was the first time that the average annual temperature exceeded 15 C, AEMET said on Monday (January 2).
Ski resorts in the northern regions of Asturias, Leon, and Cantabria have been closed since the Christmas holidays due to a lack of snow.
