  • Story Text:The Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral, Pope Francis’ hometown church, hosted on Wednesday (January 4) a mass to pay the last respects to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI ahead of his funeral on Thursday (January 5).
    Dozens of faithful attended the mass celebrated by the metropolitan archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Mario Aurelio Poli, to honour late Benedict XVI.
    Poli said the Emeritus’ resignation when he “thought he couldn’t respond to the mission God entrusted him” was “exemplary.”
    The liturgy was hosted at Pope Francis’ hometown cathedral as, before being elected to lead the Catholic church after Benedict’s resignation in 2013, he had served as archbishop of Buenos Aires for over a decade, the priest of the archdiocese of the Argentinian capital city, Facundo Fernandez Buils, said.
    Pope Francis will preside at a funeral Mass in St. Peter's Square on Thursday for his predecessor, who died on Saturday (December 31) at the age of 95.
    Since Monday (January 2), the body of the Pope Emeritus Benedict has been lying in state in St. Peter's Basilica, where more than 160,000 people had filed past to pay their respects as of midday Wednesday.
