- Story Text:As the cold wave tightened its grip over parts of northern India, New Delhi on Thursday (January 05) reported the coldest day of the season.
Scientist at the India meteorological department, R.K. Jenamani said cold wave conditions and dense fog will prevail for the next 24 hours and gradually start reducing from Friday (January 06).
People who stepped out for work in the chilly weather and fog wore multiple layers of clothing to keep the cold at bay.
People commuting on bicycles and two-wheelers were the worst hit with their bodies being exposed to the low temperatures.
"My hands burn (due to the cold). I have bought gloves right now. My fingers are numb. I can't feel my body, said a New Delhi resident, Pramod Kumar.
The weather did not spare the animals as well who were either curled up on carpets to get warmth or were covered with blankets by their caretakers.
Meanwhile, some parts of the famous Dal Lake remained frozen in northern Srinagar city of Jammu and Kashmir territory as tourists coming from different parts of the country enjoyed the cold weather.
Snowfall in states like Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh has a direct impact on other northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.
South Asia's winters are not as cold as other regions such as North America, but the millions of poor here are hit harder because they live in the open and do not have enough warm clothes and some even die. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
