- Story Text: Cleanup was underway in California on Thursday (January 5) after a severe "atmospheric river" storm unleashed high winds, torrential rains, and mudslides across the state.
Crews from the California Department of Transportation, known as Caltrans, deployed throughout the state on Thursday to clear boulders and mudslide debris from roadways. The agency reported that several roads had been reopened following the cleanup efforts.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday (January 4), and state officials urged Californians to avoid travel during the storm. By Thursday, however, many vehicles were back on the roads despite ongoing showers.
Forecasters predict more storms will move through the state in the coming days, with 10 additional inches of rain likely in the next week across northern and central California, said Bob Oravec, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
