- Story Text: Leaders from Latin America, Portugal, and Spain were set to start the 28th Iberoamerican Summit on Friday (March 24) in the Dominican Republic.
Heads of state of Iberoamerican countries such as Honduras, Chile, Ecuador, and Portugal and the Puerto Rico governor landed in Santo Domingo on Wednesday (March 22) ahead of the opening of the annual Iberoamerican Summit under the motto “Together for a fair and sustainable Iberoamerica.â€
“We have to discuss the causes of migration and how to deal with the migration phenomenon that either in our country and in Latin America is tremendously difficult, and all the involved countries have to collaborate much more,†said the Chilean President, Gabriel Boric, upon his arrival at the island nation on Thursday (March 23).
Ahead of the summit’s opening, the 22 participant nations’ Foreign ministers met to discuss the agreements the leaders will sign on Saturday’s (March 25) summit.
The document will enshrine four commitments on the climate emergency, food insecurity, digital gap, and international finance.
The summit was first organized in 1991, and it is held on a biennial basis.
