- Story Text:The United States' amphibious assault ship Makin Island is part of the U.S.' plan to defend ally South Korea and the Indo-Pacific region at large, said its commanding officer Tony Chavez at a news conference on Thursday (March 23), amid escalating tensions after North Korea’s missile launches.
The warship arrived at a naval base in the southeastern port city of Busan on Wednesday (March 22) to join large scale amphibious drills which kicked off on Monday (March 20) near Pohang on South Korea's east coast for a two-week run until April 3.
Around 12,000 navy and marine personnel from the two countries are expected to take part in the exercises featuring some 30 warships, 70 aircraft and 50 assault amphibious vehicles, the South Korean military said.
Just hours before the ship docked, North Korea fired multiple cruise missiles off its east coast, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, in apparent protest of ongoing drills by the U.S. and South Korea.
